DPP: Exercise 16: Strength of Interpretation

The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the range of interpretive possibilities with the removal of color.  Essentially, a greater range of tone is available in monochrome.  This can be seen in the image collection here.  The original exposure is above and is followed below by low and high key treatments, both in color and black and white.

Low key:  Maximum contrast and shadow create a monochrome image that is interesting for highlighting wall texture.  The color, version, though, results in somewhat unnatural and even garish color.  The widows, for example, have become green.

High key:  Maximum brightness, whites, and slightly increased exposure and clarity produce what seem to me two acceptable images.  The color is a bit washed out but still not unnatural.  It might represent a clear noon day in July, with the sun reflecting off a light colored wall.
