Exercise 35: The Lighting Angle

In this exercise we are asked to do a little still-life set-up and shoot a series of images using our newly built diffuser demonstrating light from a number of different angles.  The two images above waere taken with light in front of the object - left naked, right with diffuser.

I then shot again with the diffuser, then worked the light the around the object - side, side-back, back.

The difference here between side and side-back seems quite remarkable.  Side-back gives a bit more definition to the object, a bit more three-dimensionality.  To make this image work better might require a reflector directly opposite the light to highlight the face now hidden in shadow.

Then over, front-over, back-over.

Over highlights the feet and legs, but hides the face. Front-over gives the best details in the statue, but back-over seems to give the best definition, again like side-back.

This proved to be an interesting and useful experiment!
