Exercise 7: Focal Lengths

Because I’m visiting a semi-rural area with no transportation of my own, I’ve been relegated to shooting what’s available:  the homes, yards, streets, and people of the neighborhood.   Not a bad project, really, as it forces you to search and look a little deeper.  I set out yesterday morning with two goals in mind:  images of the area’s signage and completing the latest exercise.

The object this time was to examine the effects of focal length (something first done in Exercise 1).  My 18-55mm kit lens allows for some variety in focal length, though nothing so dramatic as might be achieved with a dedicated telephoto or super wide angle.  The results of the morning’s shooting are shown here in two series.

The implications are rather obvious and are noted in the course notes:  as focal length increases, angle of view decreases.  It seems Freeman may have written the course with film in mind, when such effects were not immediately viewable on a computer screen or via an LCD, when you had to wait a day or two to get your negatives process and prints made.
